Working with Community Organisers 20140 0 28/07/2014
The Community Organisers Programme is run by the community and social enterprise organisation, Locality. The Programme has the ambitious goal to recruit and train 500 senior community organisers and 4500 part-time volunteers over 4 years. Now into the final year of the programme, Locality developed an Inspiration Network of senior community organisers to take on development roles such as training and mentoring. They realised that the Network required some additional training in how to host and work with large groups, and we were delighted to be invited to run this training, based on Art of Hosting practice.
Our team is Linda Mitchell, Sarah Whiteley and myself. The three of us regularly work together to deliver training and facilitation. We ran a 2-day training course for the Inspiration Network in May, with a follow-up session in July. This was a real treat for us. Rather than seeing training as a one-off, Locality saw the value of the Network trying out the methods for a couple of months and then inviting us to come back together to learn from each other. In order to maximise the learning opportunity, we worked with five volunteers from the Network who co-designed and co-hosted the follow up training with us to get maximum experience. We loved working in this way and the volunteer team really enjoyed the process.
We’re returning to work with a new cohort of trainees in September and are looking forward to continuing our relationship with the Community Organisers as they continue their important work.
